Did your family ever own a wooden box with recipes written on index cards? I asked my mom if she ever owned one. She didn't. She had cookbooks but not the vintage wooden box. I got myself one and started writing recipes I've been making here in China. It helps to have friends who are good cooks too. We have been having themed dinners and brunches.
